Welcome to Madison, Indiana!

The Madison, Indiana, area is a great place to live and do business. Its people are warm and friendly, and the Hoosier work ethic is strong. Roots run deep as many families have lived in this community for several generations.


Jefferson County, Indiana, is a regional center for employment, shopping, tourism, entertainment, health care and education. It is the home of world-class industry as well as cozy coffee shops and retailers.

Jefferson County’s largest city, Madison, is a charming commercial center on the banks of the Ohio River. Founded in 1809, Madison continues to preserve its 19th century heritage as a thriving river port. Most of the downtown area is designated a National Historic Landmark District. Madison’s 12,443 residents enjoy the advantages of a traditional downtown shopping district as well as a bustling, modern hilltop business district. Madison embraces such regional facilities as King’s Daughters’ Hospital and Health Services and the southeast campus of Ivy Tech Community College.

Nearby Hanover, Indiana, with a population of 3,768, is the home of Hanover College, a highly-regarded liberal arts college. Smaller communities like Brooksburg, Canaan, Chelsea, Deputy and Dupont all have their own festivals and their own sources of community pride. Jefferson County is also proud to be the location of some of Indiana’s finest natural areas, Clifty Falls State Park and Big Oaks Wildlife Refuge.
