Government Services
in Madison and Jefferson County, Indiana

Animal Control
For animal control problems, county residents should call the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department at 265-2648. City of Madison residents should call the Police Department at 265-3347.

To locate a lost pet or adopt an animal, the Madison-Jefferson County Animal Shelter is open noon to 5 p.m. seven days a week. It is located at 2727 Hannah Drive, behind Ivy Tech State College. Driver's Licenses and Plates
The Jefferson County Bureau of Motor Vehicles is located at 175 Demaree Drive, Madison, Indiana. Hours are 8:30-5 Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday; 8:30-6:30 Thursday; and 8:30-12:30 Saturday. Closed Sunday and Monday. Proof of birth date and residency are required for driver's licenses. For additional requirements and information, call (812) 265-5513.

Health Department/WIC
The Jefferson County Health Department is located at 715 Green Road. (Turn into the state hospital grounds. The building is just north of the Lide White Boys & Girls Club.)
Hours are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Services include immunizations and TB testing, community health nursing, home health care, environmental health and screenings for blood pressure, diabetes, lead, pregnancy and hepatitis. The registrar issues birth and death certificates. Certified car seat technicians can fit your child’s car seat to your vehicle properly. For information, call (812) 273-1942.

WIC (Women, Infants & Children) is a nutritional program for pregnant and breast-feeding mothers and children under age 5. To find out if you qualify for WIC, call (812) 273-3942 for an appointment.

Income Tax
Individuals, partners, stockholders in subchapter S corporations, trusts, estates, and nonresidents with income from sources in Indiana pay a 3.4 percent adjusted gross income tax.

In Jefferson County, Indiana, a County Economic Development Income Tax of .35 percent was adopted in 2004.

Library
The Madison-Jefferson County Public Library is located at 420 W. Main St. Hours: 9-9 Monday-Thursday, 9-6 Friday, 9-5 Saturday and, during the school year, 1-5 Sunday. Call 265-2744 or visit www.mjcpl.org.

Property Tax
Jefferson County, Indiana, property tax rates are based on the township and school district where a property is located. Tax payments are normally due on May 10 and November 10.

Homeowners may apply for property tax exemptions in these categories: mortgage, homestead credit, standard deduction, over 65, blind, disabled, veteran with total disability, veteran with partial disability (service connected), veteran of World War I and spouse of World War I veteran.

Public Transit
Catch-A-Ride provides a loop route in Madison, Indiana, and curb-to-curb service throughout Jefferson County. Arrangements should be made at least 24 hours in advance. For information or to arrange for a ride call 1-800-330-7603. www.car.lifetime-resources.org.

Sales Tax
As of April 1, 2008, Indiana has a 7 percent sales tax rate.

Storm Warnings
Storm sirens mean the National Weather Service has advised residents to take cover. It may be a severe thunderstorm or a tornado; even the threat of hail or wind is considered a danger to human life. The siren means take cover and turn on a radio or TV to find out the specifics. Sirens are tested on the first Wednesday of each month at 11:30 a.m. unless there appears to be a threat of storm.

Trees
City of Madison residents need permission to cut or trim trees in the public right of way. For permission and a list of approved trimmers, call the city arborist at 265-8308.

Voting
The state of Indiana holds primary elections on the first Tuesday following the first Monday of May. General elections are held on the first Tuesday following the first Monday of November. You must be registered in order to vote. New voters must register at least 30 days prior to the election.

The Jefferson County Voter Registration Office is located on the second floor of the Courthouse. Hours are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. In addition to the Courthouse, new residents can register to vote at Workforce Development, WIC and at the Bureau of Motor Vehicles.

Those who are registering will be asked for a copy of a personal identification document, such as a current and valid photo identification, utility bill, bank statement, government check, paycheck or other government document that shows your name and address.

Zoning
All of Jefferson County, excluding Madison and Hanover, is covered by a county zoning ordinance. Madison and Hanover zoning districts include a two-mile radius from the corporate limits. Downtown Madison is protected by a historic district ordnance. For information call:
